Do I need a website manager is a question very few people wonder or think about. And yet, it is important for your business to know the answer to that question. If you have a business website and you want that website to function effectively you might need a website manager. Might is not an answer, either I do or I don’t . . . which is it? Okay, here is the deal. If you actively maintain your website (read this link if you don’t know what “maintain your website” means) and are adding new and relevant content to your website at least once a month the answer is No. More than once a month is better. How many of you are doing that?
A Website Manager should be Responsible for the Following:
- Website Hosting is necessary for your website to be connected to the internet. Your website can be hosted or located on any server, however most websites are housed within huge server farms run by companies like GoDaddy, Host Gator, or WP Engine. Your website manager should maintain the relationship with whomever houses your website. It can be on your personal server or your website managers server or a company like GoDaddy. You get to choose!
- Domain Name(s) are purchased from domain name registrar companies like GoDaddy and Host Gator and registered through ICANN. Your website manager makes sure your domain name registration is current and doesn’t expire. If your domain name expires, your website will cease to exist on the internet in a very short period of time.
- Website Maintenance is like cleaning and maintaining your house. The internet is full of hackers and virus’ that mean harm to your website. And technical accidents happen as well. Just like a leak in your homes plumbing, or a broken window, or an attack of insects. Your website needs repair when things happen. Links break, images break, videos break, and website software programs need updating often (usually 2 or 3 each week). Pages, Blogs, and occasionally an entire website can disappear. Website maintenance is a Very Important Job of your website manager. Without website maintenance nothing else matters!
A Website Manager should also be Responsible for These:
- SEO – Search Engine Optimization mystifies lots of folks. It’s really about developing and maintaining your website the preferred way of Search Engines. Google is without piers when it comes to Search Engines. They provide approximately 6 Billion website searches every day. That’s right, everyday. And they do it all for FREE. Nearly 90% of all website searches (Outside of China) are done using Google’s Search Engine. Following Google’s recommendations makes it easier for Google to refer your website in a SERP (Search Engine Results Page). That’s exactly what you want to happen. If Google puts you on the first page of a SERP you are exactly where you want to be. That’s another job of your website manager.
- Relevant New Content is important and it keeps your website fresh. If you provide new content on a regular basis your website visitors have a reason to come back to your website. If you never add any new content to your website then there is no reason to revisit your website. New content can be in the form of new pages, modified content on existing pages, or a Blog. Changing or adding videos and images is okay but doesn’t have the impact with Search Engines that dynamic written words do. New information about your products, services, or industry is what Google in particular is looking for.
Okay, there you have it. Now, what’s your answer? Do you need a website manager? Are you your website manager? The list of website manager’s responsibilities noted above is a guide to what needs to happen to your website on a very regular basis. Google will not respect your website until you respect it. If Google doesn’t respect your website you might as well not have a website because no one will ever be able to find it on a random or organic search.
